Oh Khairina my dear!

Khairina my second daughter and my 3rd child is as gentle as a lamb.  She's so gentle that she's easily bullied by people around her.  Out of the 3 attending primary school, she's the one struggling with school work and the environment.  She does not project any demeanor of being confident, she is very timid, introvert and afraid to ask question.

She had been lagging in her school work and more often than not her exercise books have comments of 'incomplete work', 'work not sent on time', 'kerja tak siap' and 'tak lengkap' and thus she often gets the shelling from me and I often blame her for being unfocused and dreamy in class and she denied all the accusations made.  This happened last year and this year she has promised that things will change and that she will change for the better.

However on the first day of school she sat at the back row of the classroom because she had wondered around the school and  forgotten to book a seat.  I was so pissed that her being unfocused and dreamy resurface.   Three weeks after, when the kids were given homework, I got even madder when I saw that her books were still not up to date, her work was messy and there's incomplete work remark in her books.  I told her to borrow a book from a friend, she said nobody wanted to lend her their book and I went 'don't you have any friend?'  Nabil heard this and went 'she's always alone Ibu, she eats alone in the canteen and she walks around the school after that all by herself.'

I then began to realize that she's never invited to any birthday parties, It wasn't an issue then because she's always following Kakak Aina (the miss popular) to parties so I didn't think much of it, but invitation from her friends, she has none.  She's a real loner, she does not make any effort to make friends and whenever I ask her 'don't you have friends?' her answer is always yes but no one is her good friend as she finds waiting for them to go to the canteen and finishing eating then only walking together, as cumbersome. She's happy when she's with her siblings you can see her being bubbly and active, running around and coming out with new ideas.  That's why I was caught of guard when Nabil told me she's a loner.

Ok back to the issue, I told her since nobody wants to lend you their book, next time can you please please please pay more attention in class, stop being dreamy because this is class work I cannot help you because I don't know what the teacher has written on the board, and she went 'Ibu I always pay attention in class, I copy slowly because I cannot see what is written on the board.' You mean to say, you can't see? Gosh! I could feel my blood draining.  All this while you were not able to finish your work on time because you cant see?  Husband did the test and true enough she failed the 4m range test. Nooo..... Oh Nina you have to wear spectacles? I'm not ready for this darling, you are to young to wear glasses.

We took her to the opticians the next day and turned out her eyesights were pretty bad her left eye the reading was 100 and her right eye 225.  After that incident, I could not help but to feel bad for accusing her of being dreamy and unfocused. While waiting for the spectacles to be ready we talked to her teacher to let her sit in front.  It has been two weeks now and so far she's doing fine with her school work.

However tonight something sad happened.  At around 9 pm I went all around looking for Khairina, she was not with Dhaniyah, not in the maid's room, neither was she in my mom's.  I was calling out her name when I suddenly  I heard a soft cry of 'I am here Ibu'.  I was so shocked she was in her room, the door was ajar but I didn't bother to check it then because the light and fan were switched off.  I went in, switch on the fan and the light and there she was lying on the bed with tears streaming down her cheeks.

I sat on the bed and asked her what went wrong, and she went 'I'm just sad' and I asked her 'why?'. And she went 'nothing' I tried to probe but she kept on saying 'nothing' when I finally said 'when you are sad, I am sad too, I love you too much that I don't want you to be sad.'  That got her more teary eyed and she went 'not many people love me Ibu,  I don't have friends, the teachers don't really pay much attention to me and even my brothers and sisters don't love me that much,'.  Oh Khairina, I was shocked to hear her say that and I became sad too 'Khairina no matter what, Ibu and Abah love you unconditionally, your siblings love you too, it is just that they have a weird way of showing it,  so it does not matter if you don't have that many friends, what's important is that you love yourself and always work hard to improve yourself, never let other people put you down and please please remember that Ibu loves you soooooo much and only want the best for you.'
She got better and went to sleep.  Looking at her sleeping, breathing evenly, looking calm and angelic made me even sadder.

Sigh!  I am not sure whether I have handled it well but I feel bad.  Bad for her to feel this way, for her not having friends and for her to have such low self-esteem.  I don't really know how to tackle this because I am a person who depends on her friends, I will be lost without them,  I need friends and I have been blessed with wonderful friends around me.  So having to handle this situation is actually out of my league! Help!

P/S - After the incident, she hugged me crying again and she said 'I did try Ibu, I tried to make friends but I don't think my friends like me that much, I'm just not important'.   'Oh baby you are really special and important to me, if they don't like you they are not worthy as your friends, they are other people out there who will be worthy of your friendship, it's just that the time has not come yet.'

Gosh! She's only 7+ and already facing this kind of problem, I really pity you Khairina and I hope things will be better for you, stop trying so hard, because you end up hurting yourself, I have faith that things will get better, I always believe that good things happen to those who wait, be patient my dear!

Khairina and Puasa

Khairina first started fasting last year when she was 6 years old,  we didn't force her to but she was persistent to do it because she wanted to join the 'jingang' during iftar because if not she will not have the opportunity to sit at the dining table during iftar.  Anyway, last year she managed to get 18 days of puasa penuh, not bad, I would say for a first timer, however Nabil still holds the record of completing the 30 days of puasa at the age of 6 (I tell you that boy is made of steel), even during the fasting month he can still find the energy to play football in his agama school field.  Not only that, he has not missed his terawih yet (not sure where this scrawny boy gets his energy from).

Back to Khairina, her first day of puasa something funny happened, we woke her up for sahur because again she insisted she wanted to fast, she was half asleep as she could not open her eyes, I carried her downstairs, washed her face and told her to rinse her mouth (nasib baik anak Ibu ni kurus, bolehlah nak dukung2 lagi).  Put her down on the chair and told her to eat, she went 'I can't open my eyes', and I went 'Ok Ibu suap, Nina bukak mulut aje, tak yah bukak mata' and she went 'Ok Ibu, thank you Ibu'.  So I fed her and when she said she was full I carried her back to bed.  The next morning (actually it's the same morning), while getting ready for school, she asked me 'Eh Ibu, Nina ni puasa ke?'  and I replied 'puasa' and she went 'Tapi Nina tak bangun sahur pun', and came my reply 'Nina makan sahur, Ibu suap sebab Nina ngantuk sangat' and she went 'Oooooh....jadi Nina kena puasalah kan?' and I just nodded my head.

Off she went to school,  I came home at around 2.30 pm and she greeted me at the door by saying 'Ibu, Nina tak puasa, sebab Nina rasa Nina mimpi jelah Nina sahur tapi Nina tak sahur kan Ibu?  Ibu answered '  'Masya Allah Khairina, Nina sahurlah Ibu yang suap Nina makan' and came her answer 'Ya ke Ibu?' and Ibu answered 'Takpelah Nina, Nina dah makan pun, jadi Nina memang tak puasa ok' and she answered 'Tapi Nina nak'.  Haiyoo... 'Nina terlupa takpe, tapi Nina makan banyak ke tadi?' I just wanted to make sure maybe she ate some food by accident because she has forgotten that she was supposed to fast and she went 'Nina beli satu pinggan nasi lemak dengan air sarsi, Nina makan sampai habis'.  Oh my dear girl itu memang bukan terlupa, itu memang dah tak puasalah and came the whine 'Nina nak!' and she continued to fast refusing to eat and drink after that and she was adamant to join us during iftar because according to her she 'termakan'.  Suka hatilah ko nak oi....tak kuasa nak layan.  ahak ahak.  The subsequent days after the incident, she has been fasting for the rest of the days and so far, she is doing ok and am glad.

Unfortunately, the thing that I can't stand is when she asks the question of 'how many hours more to berbuka?' and after 5 mins she will be asking the same question again and again and again.  To solve the problem, we bought her a watch that she always wanted and my my whaddaya know she seldom bothers us with the question again.  Pretty good trick, I would say.

The thing about fasting month is, cooking has been a fulfilling affair because the are all eager to eat and nothing goes to waste and everything I cook is delicious to the kids (which is an achievement because I'm a lousy cook) and that shows when people are hungry, anything goes.

Khairina and Dhaniyah First Day of School

Khairina

So it was Khairina first day of school today. I still remember her first day in kindi, when she was 4, how she was unhappy and cried when I had to leave the premise. Hence I'd imagined that it may be a drama today too as well although few weeks before that she told me how excited she is to be in Year One and she just can't wait for school to start soon. Not only that she had been parading her school outfit in front of everybody with socks and shoes on and backpack strapped on her shoulders. So I commented on hubby that should be a good sign ain't it?

And that reminded me of Nabil on the eve of his first school day where he went 'Abah, is it true that I'll be Year One tomorrow? I'm not ready,' and how that statement caught us off guard as we thought he is brave enough to go through Year One and everything will be plain sailing. How wrong we were!!!

Alright back to Khairina, so I was actually prepared for her to suddenly get nervous breakdown and that she may shed a few tears or even throw a tantrum so I told hubby to just stay on until recess.

That morning when I woke her up, I was pleased that she woke up with a smile, getting her ready was also easy, so when all 3 were ready I sent them off to their father's car.
While I was at work, I called hubby to see how thing went and he said everything's fine. Khairina is ok and she has managed to make few friends.

Khairina eagerly waiting for the lesson to start

As my timetable was quite free on Monday, I decided to check on her during her recess. I watched her from afar and she was doing so fine, she looked calm and confident, she chit-chatted with her new found bestfriend, they sat together and ate the food they brought from home. When I aprroached, she was pleasantly surprised to see me and a few minutes later, the big brother joined her for break and played his brotherly role pretty well, sitting next to the sister and making her comfortable in this new environment. I was overwhelmed, they are both big kids now that I had to put both my hands on my chest. (Read : emo+overeact).

When I told her, I need to go off, she just said "Pergilah" and when I asked "Will you be alright?' She went 'Yes, yes, Ibu pergi ajelah' and that made me sad. My girl is so big, she doesn't need me that much anymore. Waaaaaaaaa....! Letting go is never easy. Soon, before I know it she's going to get married and she'll forget about me. Waaaa....!! (ok ok that was overboard and way out of topic). sorry.

Look at that smile. This photo is taken right after recess

Engrossed in a discussion

That night when I asked her how she liked her school, she said she liked it because she can go shopping and I went Shopping?! Where?! And she went shopping in the school canteen, I like it Ibu, I like spending money in the canteen. Hah! Alamak who taught you this huh? Wonder where you get that idea from? And that night before going to bed she told hubby that he doesn't need him to wait in school anymore.

We got worried for nothing. She is doing fine. She likes school just hope she continues to like school for the next 10 years of her life.

Dhaniyah

Today was Dhaniyah's first day in a kindergarten. We opted for the afternoon session class as she has trouble waking up early in the morning. For the past 2 weeks we have been getting her prepared for school by reminding her she needs to go to school soon and making her repeat her class name and teacher's name.

She was not eager with the idea of going to school. When we asked her whether she looks forward for school, she will say 'school ada slide' so we weren't sure whether 'ada slide' is good enough to make her go to school. Nonetheless, it was difficult getting her ready today, but when was told that I'll be coming home to take her to school, she was ok.

Was happy at the very beginning

Busy colouring

She made no fuss entering the classroom, so I was happy and I thought this should be easy. I told her to sit down, she obliged, the teacher gave her a piece of paper, a picture of 2 pears for her to colour, she quickly took out her colour pencils and began to colour, she was doing a good job and I told her that I shall wait for her outside, she went 'Ok, tapi Ibu jangan pergi mana-mana ok?' and in my heart I went 'Oh Oh' so I stood there and from time to time she would lift up her head to make sure I was there. About half and hour later the principal told us to leave the premise and that the children are under their good care so while I was making myself to the exit I heard 'Nak Ibu, Nak Ibu' and I saw her running after me. I did not have the heart to leave her that way, that I carried her back to her classroom, she protested but after I promised that I shall wait for her she agreed.

She was sobbing here

Instead of sitting on the chair, she decided to sit on me and continued colouring, they were other kids crying too and I felt bad that I was the only parent there when the rest had left the building. I then coaxed her to sit on the chair and to make sure that I will not leave her, she had one hand holding the colour pencil and colouring the picture given and the other hand all the time holding my hand. Smart girl!

About 20 minutes later, the teacher told them to line-up so they can go to the sink to wash their hands and ready for snack so I took the opportunity to fled when I heard a loud wail of 'Nak Ibu, Nak Ibu, Ibu tipu Niyah' Alamak! My own daughter called me a penipu. What example have I set? What have I done. It was a tear-jerker, heart-wrenching but I had no choice so I left the place.

I waited for her to get back, when she did, she looked happy and when I asked 'Did you like school?' She said 'Best' and when I asked are you going tomorrow she answered 'yes' I was overjoyed until she said 'Besok Ibu kena hantar shaya pash tu tunggu shampai shaya balik tau, shebab nanti shaya nangish shebab shaya shedih shangat shangat pash tu shaya nangish banyak banyak'

Ayoyo! How now brown cow?

Kids

Khairina Selfless Act

You know my daughter Khairina is such a selfless homosapien. Too selfless that sometimes it worries me that she'll get easily bullied by the people around her. Though she looks forward to be in Year One soon but because of her too selfless act, I can't help but worrying and as it is now I'm trying to teach her to be tougher and learn to say 'No' but so far it has not been successful.

For example just the other day, my two elder girls were watching tv in my dad's room and my eldest Nuraina was sitting on the chair and Khairina on the bed and Nuraina complained that she needs more room to stretch her legs because her legs feel crammed and you know what, Khairina offered her shoulders for Nuraina to rest her feet on. I was appaled when she said that and began lifting her Kakak Aina's leg to put on her shoulders and I was even mad at Aina for letting her to do such.

Sometimes she's just too sweet, gentle and nice (I know I should be glad) that people easily take advantage of her even baby Hilman would order her around, everytime when he throws the ball he'd go 'Kakak amik' and Khairina would obligingly follow his instrcution without protest and mind you this goes on more than 10 throws ok?

That is why Hilman first word was 'Kakak' because he was all the time refering to this particular 'kakak', Khairina who would come to his aid every time.

Hilman Monosylabic words

As for Hilman, ever since he knew how to talk I've been teaching him to say please and thank you and everytime he asks for milk I will make him say 'Please Ibu, I love you Ibu soooo much.' But what happens now is whenever he asks for milk and when I say 'what must you say?', instead of saying 'please' he'd say 'ooo mud'(so much). Yeah so basically I've been teaching him to say the wrong thing.

Not only that when he counts, he doesn't start with the number 'one' instead he will go 'tuu, twi' eventhough when we mention 'one' with expectation for him to repeat he'll proceed with 'tuu, twi' with his toothy smile.

And one more interesting thing about Hilman, everytime when we enter the house he'll go 'Ahhkom' meaning (assalammualaikum), I find that to be so cute and that never fails to make me laugh everytime.

My darling Khairina

My third child, aka my second daughter Engku Nureen Khairina turned 6 last 15 October. As this month is a busy month for all of us, we didn't get to make a birthday do for her. Nonetheless to celebrate the day she requested for a special dinner at Swensen's restaurant as they wanted to indulge on ice-cream after the dinner.

Khairina succesfully managed to persuade Abah to take us to Swensen's

The long-awaited ice-cream cake

The children goofing around

My Khairina is a very gentle girl, she's very lady-like so different than my other 2 girls as the other 2 are pretty loud and quite aggressive. So much so, she is often being bullied by the siblings. She doesn't really know how to fight back hence we will see her crying most of the times. She gives in most of the times, selfish is not in her vocabulary making her at a lose end most of the times.

Of all my children, I felt that she was not very ready to become a big sister when I was pregnant to my fourth as she was still a baby herself though she has the widest age gap between my fourth. She is the slowest to read, she still hasn't finished her books compared to the elder two who completed the whole course when they turned 6 early of the year. She's still reading Iqra' 4 when the other 2 have read quran when they were her age.

As she'll be going to Standard 1 next year, she's adding up to my worries as they way I see it she is still unprepared to face the primary school out there. She lacks the sense of responsibility, she has such hideous handwriting, she often loses her things and she takes things very easy. However, this girl of mine is very helpful, not that stubborn and such an amiable person. She is Hilman's favourite sister and a favourite among her uncles and aunties too.

Khairina, my hope for you is that you will find success in life and always remain happy throughout your life. In the meantime, can you please please please take good care of your things and yourself? Kalau orang buli tu, cuba lawan sikit and learn to say 'no' when you don't really want to do the thing people ask you to, but Ibu is an exceptionlah you cannot say 'no' to Ibu tau. ok?

Lotsa love my dear,
Ibu.

P/S- oh ya your birthday do, insyaAllah will be held somewhere in the mid of November so please be patient and your birthday gift will come on that day too so stop asking the question over and over again. ok?

In a Flash

Last Saturday, my eldest daughter Nuraina took part in a competition called 'Pertandingan Syair Islam' and she emerged as champion beating other 20 students from other religious schools all around P.J. Good job darling!

Sadly, we did not manage to witness our daughter road to glory due to a communication breakdown. We started the day quite early as my daughter had to be in her religious school by 7.15. So I woke her up at around 6.30 am, after taking her bath and prayer, I told her to get ready, she was then clad in her agama school attire as stated in the rules for the competition. She told me to put some light make-up on her face and once done, the time was closed to 7.10 am. I told her to eat something but she went 'we are late already, Ibu, we have to go now, Quick'. Furthermore, she didn't feel hungry due to the butterfly fluttering in her stomach.

So we walked to the school which takes less than 3 minutes walking distance and true enough we were the first to reach the school. The other participants for tilawah, story telling, pidato and khat writing came minutes later. Their ustazah (the religious teachers) were the last ones to arrive about 20 minutes later. So things got pretty kelam kabut and I was told she was number 31 to perform that day. The ustazah told me that the competition will commence at 8.30 am.

At around 8.30 am, I called my daughter through her handphone, and she said it is not starting yet. As we were planning to take everybody to watch kakak Aina, we basically time ourselves that we should have ample time to watch her if we go around 10.00 am as each contestant takes 5 minutes to perform. So as we were about to get everybody into the car at around 10.00 am, hubby received a message from Kakak Aina 'Dah habis dah' and we were looking at each other and our brood in the car and we went HUH! Dah habis! Laaa... Macamana boleh jadi camtu?

Dissatisfied, we still went to the religious school located in Damansara Utama. The place was swarming with people, it was difficult for us to locate our dear daughter, as everybody looked almost the same in their uniform. Afer a wild goose chase, met her ustazah and was informed that only 20 students took part and she was the 16th person to perform. That was around 10.30 and result will only be announced at around 2.30. So we decided to go back.

When asked on how did she think she performed that day, she said "Ok, I don't think I can get number one sebab ada orang yang hebat lagi tapi no 2 or no.3 can kot Ibu". Nevertheless, she tried her best and that what matters. So she only got to know the result on Monday when she attended her agama school. The ustazah took the trophy home on her behalf.

Hilman had his second haircut last Sunday, he was such a sport that he didn't cry at all this time. Well done, my boy!

Nabil is now playing football in this team called Elves and he plays the position of a striker and doing pretty well in his team.

Khairina is now reading quite well, still slow but not too bad. She had us almost worried as the elder siblings could read at the age of 5 and she was still struggling when she was at that age. She still behaves like a baby, doesn't have a sense of responsiblity, often loses her belongings be it books, pencils (especially), eraser and etc. Tak tahulah budak ni. Berbuih dah mulut cakap.

Dhaniyah still loves dancing and singing but still shy and timid in public. But she sure can shake those booties.

So that's it. My progenies in a flash!
